Michael Blake in rehearsal for the performance of Displaced as part of the Disrupt exhibition, 29 September 2021, Union House Cape Town.
Displaced: 101 ways to long for a home is a sound piece created by the New Music composer Michael Blake in response to the artist's book installation 101 ways to long for a home. Michael visited the studio of Emma Willemse in 2018 and recorded the opening and closing sounds of the Rupture Books, produced by the discarded parquet floor blocks from which they were constructed. These recordings, as well as various other found sounds, were layered and manipulated by Michael to construct Displaced. This strategy is a reference to the extensive use of found material in the hundred and one artist's books contained in 101 ways to long for a home.
